What is a warm air furnace
Warm Air Furnaces
An electric furnace can be used by itself, paired with a straight air conditioning system though it is usually paired with a heat pump. Frequently called an Air Handler with back up electric heat, electric furnaces usually only provide electric heat. An electric furnaces uses a resistance heating element that air passes directly over and then distributes that air through a ventilation system.
Natural Gas Furnace
A natural gas furnace can also be used by itself, paired with a heat pump as a hybrid or dual fuel system though it is usually paired with a straight air conditioning system. Natural gas is burned in a metal heat exchanger. Air is run across the heat exchanger and then distributes that air through a ventilation system. When paired with a straight air conditioner the natural gas furnace provides all of the heat. When used in a dual fuel system that is pair with a heat pump, the furnace only provides heat when emergency heat is turned on or the exterior temperature drops below 40 degrees. Natural gas furnaces come in different levels of efficiency, from 80% to 90% and greater. For more information on the efficiency levels contact us.
An oil furnace works in exactly the same way as a natural gas furnace except that it burns oil instead of natural gas. Oil systems tend to be older homes where the system was installed where natural gas was not available.
A propane furnace works in exactly the same way as a natural gas furnace except that it burns propane instead of natural gas. Propane systems are usually the exact same equipment as natural gas that just use conversion kits to work with the propane. Propane is usually used in newer homes that are not connected to a natural gas line.
